Knowles Travel Award

whats going on

PURPOSE

To support the participation of graduate students at the Gordon Research Conferences (GRC), Bioorganic Chemistry and Enzymes, Coenzymes, and Metabolic Pathways. The Award is administered by the Division of Biological Chemistry (DBC) of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

NATURE

The award consists of travel support up to $1,000 for one graduate student to attend the Bioorganic Chemistry GRC and up to $1,000 for one graduate student to attend the Enzymes, Coenzymes, and Metabolic Pathways (ECMP) GRC. The award is distributed annually.

ESTABLISHMENT

The passing of Jeremy Knowles on April 3, 2008 was mourned by the many who knew him. Knowles’s research lay at the intersection of chemistry and biology and sought a detailed understanding of how enzymes catalyze the reactions that sustain life. He was a regular and enthusiastic participant and past chair of the Enzymes, Coenzymes, and Metabolic Pathways Gordon Research Conference. To honor Jeremy Knowles, the Division of Biological Chemistry established an endowment for the Jeremy Knowles Travel Award in 2008 to support the participation of graduate students at the Enzymes, Coenzymes, and Metabolic Pathways and the Bioorganic Chemistry Gordon Research Conferences, both of which cover the areas spanned by Knowles’s research. Financial support for this endowment came from multiple donors who were former students and postdocs of Knowles and members of the DBC.

RULES OF ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION

Any graduate student attending and presenting at the Bioorganic and ECMP GRC meetings can be selected for the Knowles Travel Award. The current GRC meeting chairs develop the criteria and process for selection, which may involve a competitive selection of the awardee from abstracts submitted to the conference or selection of a top presentation.

PROCEDURES

Following the Bioorganic or ECMP GRC meeting, the chair informs the DBC treasurer of the awardee. The treasurer then reimburses the student for allowable travel expenses (up to $1000 per awardee).

FUND MANAGEMENT

The ACS Biological Chemistry Division will manage the investment of funds contributed for this award. The fund is held in a separate account.
